Fishing

Jackson Bay is a fisherman's dream. Whether 10 kilometres offshore pulling in grouper & tuna or up one of many pristine rivers casting a fly or lure, there is no chance of going hungry and you may be the only person for miles around.

The trout die of old age in this area that holds fish in over 30 rivers or streams and 4 lakes within an hours drive of Hannah's Beach. Sea-run salmon are also found in the rivers. The gin-clear rivers & streams are open from 1st October until 30th April (refer to fish and game regulations for specific lakes and rivers open all year round).

Lake fishing is popular on Lake Ellery, which can be walked to (30 minutes) via a track from the Cascade Road. Best access is via a magnificent 5-minute bush jet boat trip up Ellery Stream. The lake stretching approximately 5 kilometres is surrounded by rolling hills and dense native bush. A sheltered spot can be found in all conditions and don’t forget to throw in the water-ski!

A favourite New Zealand delicacy served in the top restaurants throughout the country is whitebait, which is easily netted in all the local streams and rivers from 1st September to 14th November. A drag net is provided for this activity and no license is required.
