Fishing
Jackson Bay is a fisherman's dream. Whether 10 kilometres offshore pulling in
grouper & tuna or up one of many pristine rivers casting a fly or lure, there
is no chance of going hungry and you may be the only person for miles around.
The trout die of old age in this area that holds fish in over 30 rivers or streams
and 4 lakes within an hours drive of Hannah's Beach. Sea-run salmon are also
found
in the rivers. The gin-clear rivers & streams are open from 1st October until
30th April (refer to fish
and game regulations for specific lakes and rivers
open all year round).
Lake fishing is popular on Lake Ellery, which can be walked to (30 minutes) via
a track from the Cascade Road. Best access is via a magnificent 5-minute bush
jet boat trip up Ellery Stream. The lake stretching approximately 5 kilometres
is surrounded by rolling hills and dense native bush. A sheltered spot can be
found in all conditions and don’t forget
to throw in the water-ski!
A favourite New Zealand delicacy served in the top restaurants throughout the
country is whitebait, which is easily netted in all the local streams and rivers
from 1st September to 14th November. A drag net is provided for this activity
and no license is required. |
