The Cookhouse at Hannah's Beach - a brief history of the area

Hannah's clearing was originally known as Donald's clearing, being named after Donald McPherson - one of South Westland's earlier settlers who was responsible for clearing trees in the area before WW1.

The land between the Hapuka & Waiatoto was owned by George Nissen who employed Donald to clear the land in return for supplies. During the period 1939 to 1940 the road was being constructed between the Turnbull and Waiatoto. Donald's clearing was situated around halfway between the two bridges. The clearing became known as Hannah's clearing after a truck driver by the name of Hannah working on the road set up camp in the clearing. The clearing was eventually to become the site of Carters timber mill and for a time was known as Carters clearing. The settlement reverted back to the current name of Hannah's Clearing following the closure of the mill, however it has been suggested the settlement should be re-named Donald's clearing in recognitian of Donald McPherson's efforts to clear the area at the beginning of last century.
