Walking
Hannah's Beach is in the heart of the South West New Zealand World Heritage
Area, a place declared by UNESCO to stand alongside the Grand Canyon and Great
Barrier Reef.
Only 5 minutes north of Hannah's Beach is the Hapuka Estuary Walk. During spring
this is a bird watcher's paradise, with Fantail, Tui, Bellbird, Wood Pigeon,
Silvereye, Grey Warbler, Parakeet and other native birds all located in the
abundant lowland forests. Other remote lake and beach walks are also plentiful
and are home to a variety of marine animals, including seals and penguins.
At Haast, 15 minutes before Hannah's Beach, there is an impressive World Heritage
Information Centre that provides excellent interpretation and information about
the area. Local services include a general store, and service stations for
motoring needs.
